Anxiety and Menopause: Exploring the Correlation between Anxiety and Menopause

Menopause, or “the change”, normally occurs in a woman between the ages of 45 and 55. During this time in a female’s life, she will experience a wide array of emotions and symptoms as the menstrual cycle ceases and establishes the end of the years in which she is productive. Many women welcome this time in their lives as they no longer must contend with monthly menstrual cycles that often leave them with painful cramping, bloating, and moodiness. However, at the same time, many women are very disheartened at the fact that their reproductive system is shutting down and they have to say goodbye to their childbearing years.


When a female experiences menopause, there are several symptoms that may be present. These symptoms normally occur as a result of the physiological imbalances that are occurring throughout the body due to fluctuations in hormones. Those are progesterone and estrogen. During menopause, when there is an imbalance throughout the body as it tries to adjust to this particular stage of life, it is very likely that these two hormones result in increased levels of anxiety. Furthermore, many health professionals believe that when a female is facing the end of her reproductive years, it causes a form of mental anguish that can result in anxiety.


There are many common signs and symptoms that a woman is experiencing anxiety during menopause. She may have trouble sleeping throughout the night, being able to eat properly, lethargy may be experienced, and general depression. When evaluating the symptoms from both anxiety and menopause, one may see how this can prove to be an extremely challenging time in the life of a female.


While women that are experiencing anxiety and menopause may feel as if there is no hope, there is! It is important to understand that when there are physiological changes occurring in the body that are resulting in demoralizing symptoms, these things can be treated. This is especially true when considering anxiety and menopause. Generally, a prescription of a particular hormone replacement therapy is prescribed. However, this is usually only done once it has been established that menopause is the base reason for the anxiety.


It is important for women to understand that they will experience many changes over the course of a lifetime when it comes to their body. Knowing and understanding these things will help to provide a more efficient and sufficient treatment method for anxiety and menopause when it is experienced. Women should ensure that they exercise on a regular basis, invest in healthy eating habits, and get plenty of vitamins and key nutrients. In addition to this, reaching out for the emotional support of others has also proved to be essential in alleviating the symptoms associated with anxiety and menopause.
